Good pronunciation is one of the most important skills for clear communication in English. Even if your grammar and vocabulary are excellent, poor pronunciation can make it difficult for others to understand you.
The good news? You can make significant improvements in just 30 days with consistent practice. Here’s a simple, effective plan you can follow.
Week 1: Build Awareness
- Record yourself reading a short paragraph every day. Listen back and compare it to a native speaker (use YouTube or podcasts).
- Focus on individual sounds that are difficult for your first language. For many learners, “th”, “r”, “v”, and “w” are tricky.
- Practice minimal pairs: ship/sheep, bit/beat, think/this.
Week 2: Master Word Stress
English is a stress-timed language. The stress on the wrong syllable can completely change meaning.
- Learn the stress patterns of common words (e.g., PHOtograph vs phoTOgrapher).
- Use apps like Forvo or YouGlish to hear words pronounced in real sentences.
- Shadow speaking: Listen to a sentence, pause, and repeat it exactly as you heard it.
Week 3: Work on Sentence Rhythm and Intonation
- Practice the “music” of English — rising and falling tones.
- Record yourself asking questions and making statements. Notice how your voice rises at the end of yes/no questions.
- Read dialogues out loud with emotion. Pretend you’re acting in a play.
Week 4: Put It All Together
- Join conversation practice sessions (our Spoken English classes are perfect for this).
- Focus on connected speech — how words link together in fast speech (“What are you doing?” becomes “Whatcha doin’?”).
- Get feedback from a teacher or language partner at least twice a week.
Daily Practice Routine (15–20 minutes)
- 5 minutes – Listen and repeat (shadowing)
- 5 minutes – Minimal pairs or word stress practice
- 5–10 minutes – Record yourself and self-correct
Bonus Tips
- Watch English TV shows and movies with subtitles first, then without.
- Sing along to English songs — it’s fun and helps with rhythm.
- Don’t be afraid of your accent. The goal is clarity, not perfection.
