The Early Advantage
Research in language acquisition consistently shows that children who are exposed to a second language early develop more natural pronunciation, stronger grammatical intuition, and greater long-term fluency than those who begin as teenagers or adults.
The reason is neurological. Young brains are in an active period of language development. They absorb patterns implicitly — the same way they learned their first language — without conscious effort or formal study.
What Age Is Best?
There is no single right answer, but general guidance is:
- Ages 3–6: Ideal for exposure through play, songs, and stories. No formal instruction needed — immersion in a supportive environment is enough.
- Ages 6–10: A structured but playful approach works well. Children can begin reading and writing in English alongside oral practice.
- Ages 11–14: More analytical learning is appropriate. Teenagers can understand grammar rules explicitly and benefit from structured courses.
Starting earlier is generally advantageous, but children who begin at any age can achieve excellent results with the right environment and motivation.
What to Look for in a Children’s English Programme
Not all courses are equal. When choosing English classes for your child, look for:
Activity-based learning. Children learn by doing — games, projects, role play, and creative tasks produce far better results than drilling grammar rules.
Small class sizes. Children need speaking opportunities. A class of 20 gives each child very little actual speaking time. Smaller groups allow meaningful participation.
Qualified teachers. Teaching children requires a different skill set from teaching adults. Ask about your teacher’s experience specifically with young learners.
A positive environment. Confidence and enjoyment are not soft outcomes — they are prerequisites for language learning. A child who enjoys English will seek out more of it.
What Parents Can Do at Home
You don’t need to be a fluent English speaker to support your child’s learning:
- Allow English cartoons and children’s programmes with English audio
- Buy simple English picture books and read together
- Praise effort and curiosity, not just correct answers
- Avoid interrupting or correcting every mistake — fluency comes before accuracy in young learners
